TEZCATL

Multimedia Installation

November 25 - 26, 2019 La Fábrica, MUTEK MX, CDMX

During the celebration of the Nocturnes for the fourteenth edition of MUTEK MX 2017 we presented TEZCATL, a piece with generative visuals reflected by mirrors. Transmutation through reflection, reflection, an unpopular job of looking inward, of recognizing ourselves, to "complete" our vital task, a work of introspection for mental liberation. A metaphor around darkness and light –reflection as a catalyst for clarity–, both being fundamental “forces” in balance according to countless cultures, including Mexica.

The work of the TEZCATL mirror is the integration of a system of elements such as Obsidian, mirrors, lasers and computers. They create a piece based on reflection, on personal immersion.

Obsidian has been used medicinally and ritualistically by our ancestors, as a purifier of the ego and against depression. It is a mirror of the soul, it manifests our fears, it helps to transmute them. The reflections of the mirrors create a continuity of the inverted graphics. The laser surrounds the piece creating geometries. They maintain a dialogue between the reflections on the screen and the laser. Obsidian acts as a metaphorical and aesthetic link to this dialogue.
